Grades Club Team Winner 21st june 2014The second event in the 2014 Scottish Grades Series took place inside the expanse of the Bells Sports Centre Dome in Perth on Sunday 1st June. The large arena was a fitting venue for the size of the entry, an excellent crowd of spectators and a competition that required the full Olympic layout of apparatus.

Over 150 gymnasts took part across the two competitions ranging from under 8 year old beginners participating in Floor and Vault to elite level gymnasts working for the 2014 regional qualifiers. The qualifiers will be held in September on Sunday 21st and it was great to see so many clubs and gymnasts testing out their progress towards the goal of a team place representing Scotland at the British Finals in November.

The entry to the grades competition was 81 gymnasts which marks a major milestone and quite possibly a record for the Men’s Artistic programme and clearly shows that the popularity of the sport is growing with movement on the performance pathway. Full results can be viewed here.

The day began with the Beginner and Intermediate Floor & Vault, a competition that is designed as the introduction for many gymnasts to competition as well as being fun, open and friendly for gymnasts not yet ready or destined to progress on the National Grades Programme. Following the Scottish Floor and Vault competition was the Scottish Grades Series event – the Prep 2 competition. Allowing gymnasts to compete on any apparatus up to all 7 it was heartening for all to see that all apparatus were strongly contested. Gymnasts competed for All Around titles in their age group as well as for the highest score on each apparatus. An additional team competition was introduced this year for the clubs where the winning club-team was the one gaining the highest number of points based on individual rankings, number of levels entered and apparatus titles won. Winning the club team competition was City of Glasgow, closely followed by Largs and West Lothian.

Some special guests also attended so not only were the stars of the future present the organisers had arranged for some stars of the past to present medals and speak a few words to the successful medal winners. The special guests included: Tommy Burke – a Scottish Junior Individual and Senior Team Champion and 1978 Commonwealth Games gymnast, Willie Lindsay – Dunfermline Senior Men’s Team, and Ron Rodgers – Scottish Junior Individual and Senior Team Champion and British Veteran champion age 69 to 75!
